Qi Baishi is a grandmaster of modern Chinese painting. He is globally celebrated for his inkwash shrimp paintings. This distinctive scroll *Group of Shrimps* is rendered in vermilion red pigment, presenting a unique artistic charm.

The vertical hanging scroll bears the inscription *“Master of Three Hundred Sealstones, Old Man Baishi, residing in Jinghua (Beijing)”*. *“Master of Three Hundred Sealstones”* is Qi Baishi’s wellknown artistic title, reflecting his outstanding accomplishments in both sealcarving and Chinese painting. Multiple authentic seals are arranged harmoniously, merging calligraphic brushwork with the spirit of Chinese epigraphy.

Dozens of shrimps are painted in vermilion red, with varied postures: gathering and dispersing, advancing and retreating. Their bodies are softly washed for translucent texture; pincers are firm and powerful; thin whiskers flow freely across the paper. Not a single stroke depicts water, yet viewers can vividly sense the shrimps swimming freely in flowing water. It perfectly embodies the supreme oriental artistic conception of “painting the spirit rather than mere appearance”.

In traditional Chinese culture, shrimps are regarded as minor dragons of water. A group of shrimps symbolizes vitality, family harmony and steady progress. This subject combines refined literati taste with auspicious folk blessings. Qi Baishi devoted decades to painting shrimps, refining his style to reach the ideal state “between likeness and unlikeness”. With concise brushstrokes, he endows tiny creatures with powerful life energy.

Different from his classic blackink shrimp works, this vermilion version adopts elegant crimson tones, striking yet refined. It serves as an excellent decorative artwork for interior display, demonstrating the collector’s aesthetic taste, as well as a precious collectible worthy of longterm inheritance.
